This is going to be a very special evening of indigenous music, art and culture, Thursday, January 20, at the 2011 River People Music and Culture Fest in Givens Performing Arts Center at UNC Pembroke.

Beginning at 7 p.m., the event features Native Award Music Award-winner Pura Fe Trio and the Deer Clan Singers, NAMMY Award-winner Dark Water Rising and Lakota John, Layla Locklear and NAMMY winner Jana Mashonee. There will also be an exhibition by Lumbee artist Jessica Clark and the Elmer Hunt Photograph Collection.

The River People Music and Culture Fest will spotlight American Indian culture from across the nation. Many of the performers have connections to North Carolina and Robeson County. Event organizers believe this event will showcase some of the most outstanding talent in the American Indian community.

In addition to the 7PM performance, several of the performers will present a special matinee performance Thursday at 10AM, January 20, for school children. Several artist talks are also planned throughout the day.
