Runaways, Part 1-Private Investigations

Private InvestigationsThe Private Investigations staff here at [truth] don’t often come across runaway child cases, but when we do they are always stressful and emotionally charged for all that are involved. Cases involved runaways almost always happen at the oddest of times and when the families least expect it. Despite the fortunate lack of frequency the Private Investigations staff here see runaway child cases, the skill and coordination involved in coming to a successful and safe conclusion to them requires the Private Investigation staff here to constantly update our knowledge on how to approach them. In that effort I recently came across an article that offers some excellent insight on runaways. In the article the author, James Lehman, MSW outlines the types of children that runaway as episodic and chronic. In the episodic type, the author is quoted to say:

“When your child runs away after something has happened, it can be viewed as episodic running away. It’s not a consistent pattern, and your child is not using it as a problem-solving strategy all the time. It’s also not something they use to gain power. Rather, they might be trying to avoid some consequence, humiliation or embarrassment. I’ve known kids to leave home because they were caught cheating in school or because they became pregnant and were afraid of their parents’ disapproval.”
